affordable solar power
« on: December 19, 2007, 08:28:10 PM »
every once in a while, something comes along that will (or at least should) change the way our world works. a silicon valley company called nanosolar has done just that. the biggest impedament to using solar power is that it's prohibitively expensive. instead of doing what most companies working on solar pannels are doing and trying to make them more efficient, nanosolar went and made existing technology ridiculously cheap to produce. with nanosolar's technology, solar power just got cheaper than coal. nanosolar can profitably sell solar pannels at $1 per watt (the next best is $3 per watt).
Quote
“With a $1-per-watt panel,” he said, “it is possible to build $2-per-watt systems.”

According to the Energy Department, building a new coal plant costs about $2.1 a watt, plus the cost of fuel and emissions, he said.
okay, that might seem negligible, but a)realize, we'll be talking about 500+megawatt plants (which works out to $50,000) and b)this solar technology is only going to get cheaper.

and the big advantage to this solar technology is that you'll be able to put it pretty much anywhere. from the article, i get the impression you'll be able to pretty much roll it on like wall paper.

with very liberal application of this technology, we could turn whole cities into power plants.

I've recently seen something much cooler than solar power
geo thermal

basically what this guy has done is drilled a hole under his house 500 feet deep
it contains 2 pipes
he runs water down then back up and circulates it under his floor
heat his whole house for the cost of the electricity to run a small pump
apparently the whole setup will pay for itself in less than 5 years

now he just needs to get him some solar wall paper to power the pump and he's set =p
